Company that has the best global Corporate Social Responsibility is.....

Microsoft

Ranked #1 Best Corporate Social Responsibility Programs, Continues Dedication to Citizens and Communities.

Companies need to answer, two aspects of their operations.
          1. The quality of their management - both in terms of people and processes               (the inner circle).
          2. The nature of, and quantity of their impact on society in the various areas.

Microsoft has accomplished these tasks two years in a row. And who doesn't like to receive an award? Microsoft was recently named number one again in Corporate Social Responsibility by the Reputation Institute.

More important than an award, is the people and communities who benefit from the employees who take their time to give back through meaningful programs and individual efforts.

The commitment to influencing local communities and to provide today's youth with the technology needed to create a better tomorrow, is the continuing efforts of Microsoft.
The World Business Council for Sustainable Development in its publication Making good Business Sense by Lord Holme and Richard Watts, used the following definition.

"Corporate Social Responsibility is the continuing commitment by business to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of the workforce and their families as well as of the local community and society at large"

What are you worth?

What are you worth?

What are you worth? A question I never knew, but have a greater understanding now. Thanks to Leona Hobbs, and her magnificent lecture in late November has brought that question to the front of my mind. I have no set amount in mind yet however, I do have a better knowledge surrounding my abilities and will continue to make a check list in order to set a price.

Leona's graphic about User Actions and what branches out from that, gave me a clearer visual in the world of Public Relations. The words: User Actions, Earned, Lists, Owned, and Paid didn't mean a lot to me and then she added on Sponsorship's, Partnership's, and Content Marketing, oh my I thought I was going to overload with information. My pleasure to announce, I was wrong.

Although there was a great deal of information given, the way in which the information was relaid was outstanding and comprehensible. I felt that I came out of the lecture with a clearer understanding.

Social media.... If I have never liked or cared about it before, I have 110% changed my mind now. I shall keep an open-mind and blast the social media world with my presents :)

Here I come!

"Worth the wait"

Worth the wait indeed, Boeing introduces the new 787 Dreamliner

Boeing has introduced the new 787 in a BIG way. Extra comfort more fuel efficiency, and cheaper prices to fly, what more could a consumer want. Maybe new sun blocks? Now they have it. Instead of the old pull down shades, Boeing has incorporated electronic dimmers, so if you want to look out of the window while the person beside you is trying to get to sleep, you can lower the level of the light coming in to please both of you.

Far too often companies are reluctant to talk directly to their customers till a problem reaches a crisis. Boeing listened, bigger storage overheads, mood lighting and more.

Executive support and advocacy is extremely important, having leadership up front, present, and engaged is the key element to reinforcing a companies values.

Take a minute and watch the video clip introduction on Boeing's new product.

Try something new

Try something new

Have you ever just wished you could do something new? Why wait try it now, each day you stall is another day gone by. Your present-day safe boundaries were once unknown limits.  Exercise this statement and volunteer.

Whether, you want to stay local, national or international just volunteer.  Experiences come from volunteering in diverse backgrounds. It does not cost you anything, just your time. Once you have put some hours into volunteering for a specific organization, you will have a better understanding if this is the right work for yourself.

The longer you wait to do something, remember that date will never be today’s date again. Remember this when in your mind you hear “I wish I should have or I wish I had the guts” will terrorize you forever.

How do you decide what the best job for you is? You could definitely take the college or university road and pay thousands of dollars to find out… that it was not for you. Or, you could volunteer too many organizations out there looking for an extra set of hands. Volunteering your services can be the method of helping and figuring out what and where you want to be.

Aboriginal Construction Program

Loyalist College

NEWS RELEASE

August 22, 2014

GRADUATE SUCCESS PROMPTS LOYALIST COLLEGE TO OFFER

ABORIGINAL CONSTRUCTION RENOVATION PROGRAM FOR SECOND YEAR

Belleville, Ontario, August 22, 2014 – Building upon the success of the graduating class of last year’s Aboriginal Construction Renovation program, Loyalist College is pleased to announce the return of the 16-week certificate program funded by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.

By enrolling in the October 2014 program, students will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the field of construction and renovation, preparing them for employment opportunities within the industry or to pursue further studies in Loyalist’s Construction Renovation certificate or diploma programs. In addition to construction renovation skills, the program includes core classes in math, communications, computers, portfolio development, and industry-recognized health and safety training. After successful completion of the program, the students will graduate with a Loyalist College Certificate.

Shane Kimball was one of last year’s Aboriginal Construction Renovation program graduates. He is now registered in the two-year Construction Engineering Technician program and will begin his studies in September.

“When I completed the certificate program, I felt that I had found something that was my own, something that I could do well,” explained Shane Kimball. “We built storage sheds for Bon Echo Provincial Park and a floating dock at Quinte Mohawk School. They were real projects, things that were of value to the communities. My success in the certificate program has prompted me to pursue this career path further and I am really looking forward to beginning classes this fall.”

“We are really excited to be receiving funding for the second time for a program that encourages our Aboriginal students to explore their interest in construction, and gain confidence in their abilities to continue on to College or the workforce” said Ann Drennan, Dean, Applied Sciences, Skills and Technology. “The program is designed in such a way that time is spent not only in the classroom but also in the community working on community projects. As an example last year's students worked on a much-needed deck which allows younger kids to get close to a Ducks Unlimited pond. The students also built two garden sheds for use in Bon Echo Provincial Park. It's a great example of Loyalist 's commitment to community partnerships.”

Tuition is free for those accepted into the program and there may also be an additional living allowance available. Those interested in applying or learning more about this opportunity are encouraged to contact the Loyalist College Aboriginal Resource Centre at 613-969-1913, ext. 2250.

Internal Communications at Dell

At Dell, internal communications are taking a strong hold within the employee’s everyday life style. Internal communications such as; LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram has helped employees connect with their co-workers.
The intent that Dell has for their employees is not about sharing ideas but rather character building to share company thoughts and opinions internally.
“You do not have to reinvent the social media wheel to do it, nor must you compromise data security. At Dell, for example, we use Salesforce’s Chatter, a collaboration tool that enables internal social networking. It delivers the familiar look and feel of sites like Facebook or Twitter to enterprise customers on a secure platform,” Exclaims Dell.
In this comment, management is speaking about employee’s being more productive and interacts more frequently. When you have offices all around the world what better way to interact with other peers.
CEO Michael Dell is an active participant which is engaging to his employees. The internal communications software at Dell allows employees to see updates on people, projects, and share files immediately.

Dell speaks loud about treating employees just as you would a customer. “Don’t neglect them when you consider your social media strategy. Whether your goal is to enhance productivity, spread company news, strengthen the culture, or all three, you don’t have to compromise the security of sensitive company information to use social media to accomplish it,” well said Dell.

In three months.....

Three things I hope to learn in the next three months to make me a better writer are....

PRACTICE EVERYDAY
Hard work every day but it will be worth the effort. If it seems impossible, there are ways I can work to improve that. I never think there is a perfect writer. A perfect writer does not exist. I think, I've grown tremendously as a writer over the last couple of years, but it has been a painful journey.

BE CONCISE AND BE CLEAR
I have heard many times that tidy, concise, and easy readings are the pluses for readers. Long, complex, and wordy are just unclear. The less words or wordiness I add into my writings, the less interest I have had in readers. I need to simply write less words but in a clearer way. I will continue to make sub-points and take extra time so that I stay focused and on track.

STAY ON TOPIC
I know how tough this one is, I start with only a few topics but end up snowballing myself to the point where I just do not make sense anymore. I back track and try to explain in an un-orderly fashion. My basic main point then becomes cloudy and unclear.

I am new to blogging and social media in general and never felt I had a use for it. Instantly, I have learned that it is imperative that I learn and learn quickly. Each week I write in my blog gives me more experience on writing. I am starting to enjoy writing and with practice I will tighten up my writing skills.

Chef Gordon Ramsay

Chef Gordon Ramsay

Aged 50+, angry all the time, never smiles, loves to teach about food, helps others maintain a sustainable restaurant, hates quitters, dislikes chefs/restaurant owners who don't put the customer first, throws things out of the kitchen when teaching students/restaurant owners, very verbal (the F-word is his choice and uses it a lot)

Chef Gordon Ramsay is a high quality Chef that lives and works in New York City as well as England. Chef Ramsay loves to teach students about cooking techniques and how to be a great cook; he also helps out restaurant owners to revamp their restaurants into fully functional high end quality restaurants. Among the many restaurants that Ramsay owns including the one in Montreal, Quebec which just closed last year, he is also one of the International Culinary Panel consultants for Singapore Airlines.
Ramsay also is in a partnership with football player David Beckham. Both have recently opened a Café in London, UK. The restaurant serves Italian cuisine with a revolving menu daily.
Not only does Ramsay have restaurants and TV shows like Hotel Hell (a spin off from Kitchen Nightmares), and several guest appearances, he also is producing a drama called The Inferno.

Check out Top Gear as Chef Gordon Ramsay impresses the audience with his lap time.

Not to be confused with the American actor Gordon Ramsey.

Common Grammar Mistakes

Grammar has always been a struggle for me. I have never had an interest in the writing world, however in the last three years in college, found myself taking extra time and help to achieve it.

The common error I run into would be the comma. The comma has been my worst enemy, however lately I have improved. I take extra time to look over my basic grammar book to see where I may have misused comma's in my writing. I am aware that I do not need to be an expert at grammar but with practice and a few golden rules in writing, I will be a successful writer.

Spelling is not a strong skill I have, but I too have spent much time making sure I do not have errors in my assignments. I would not say I am terrible at spelling, however I do find I hold myself back from attempting to write.

My goal is to be a better writer and with practice I will become one.

Slacker or not ?

My first blog.

Today, outside the Public Relations class attempted and successes were made by walking the slack rope challenge. I hope everyone had a great time, I sure did.

I have never heard of slack lining prior to today. Not knowing much about the sport, I took some time to read about it. Practice in balance with a clear mind is key to walking the rope which is anchored by two points. Some people suggest this is a form of tightrope walking, however stretching and bouncing along a long and narrow trampoline is more of dynamics.

Because, of the dynamics of the slack line this rope always for tricks and stunts to be attempted and concord. This new sport has quickly become popular, because you can take it anywhere. Versatile, cheap and easy to assemble/disassemble is a prominent reason to buy it.

Participants in slack lining are known as "slackers". Just try it.

Stay tuned for more posts.
